Opera Society

Dallas Lutheran School has operated an Opera Society since 1995. Most years we attend one opera at the Dallas Opera although we have also attended opera productions at the Forth Worth Opera and at SMU, and we have attended more than one opera a season when the demand is great. We have attended the following operas and more since our inception:

    * Don Giovanni (Mozart)
    * Magic Flute (Mozart)
    * The Marriage of Figaro (Mozart)
    * Carmen (Bizet)
    * Die Walkure (Wagner)
    * Siegfried (Wagner)
    * Gotterdammerung (Wagner)
    * The Barber of Seville (Rosinni)
    * La Boheme (Puccini)

Before attending the production, we go through the opera in depth, studying the plot and, of course, the top arias and numbers in each opera. Students learn to sing at least one of the arias in the original language. These study sessions take place during activity period on Wednesdays. We also watch at least one DVD version of the opera before seeing it live.  Obviously, the goal is to have fun and ‘take a bath’ in great music, but we prepare for the productions in a very serious way.  In return for an admission fee, students receive a ticket to the opera, a libretto, lessons in pronouncing Italian, German, French etc. and a ride to the opera.
