Drama
Dallas Lutheran School’s Drama Department produces three-four large shows a year as well as promoting student involvement in acting competitions. From one act plays to Broadway musicals, students from grades 7-12 are given the opportunity to not only star on stage, but also to learn the backstage production skills involved in putting on quality events. Carrying on a DLS legacy of quality drama productions, students build a sense of community and pride in working together for productions audiences are sure to love.
DRAMA LEADERSHIP INFORMATION:
The leadership for the Dallas Lutheran School Productions is spread amongst a group of individuals.
- Miss Meyer and Mr. Fluegel direct the varsity drama productions. Miss Meyer is in charge of costumes and make-up needs. Mr. Fluegel is in charge of set construction, blocking, and characterization. Mr. Nitz is serving as the drama "producer."
- Mrs. Thomson directs the junior varsity drama productions with a high school student as an "assistant director."
- Mr. Abbott is in charge of all things music.
- Mrs. Jeffery is in charge of choreography.
DRAMA ELIGIBILITY:
- Grade Eligibility: Auditions for a play vary by production. JV Drama signifies 7-9th. Varsity Drama signifies 10-12th.
- Academic Eligibility: It is the expectation of the teacher/directors that students will maintain or better their grades during the duration of the play. Students are permitted to try out only if they are passing all classes at the time of the audition. For more information, please consult the student handbook.
- Extra-Curricular Eligibility: Each production creates its own rules, but typically a production will declare that varsity athletes will not be eligible to audition due to the time conflicts of the athlete and actor/actress.
PARENT ASSISTANCE:
Parental involvement is desired and appreciated! If you are interested, here are ways to help:
- Read lines with your student so they memorize more readily.
- Promote the play by displaying a poster within work and church settings.
- Be the house host one of the two nights (meet, greet, and be available for questions).
- Assist with set construction and/or striking the set (power tools and paint).
- Provide special assistance with lighting or costuming as you are able.
- Provide refreshments for the cast and crew on the nights of tech week.
- Host the cast party after the second show with other parents.
- Help your student furnish their costume.
- Work in the concession booth prior to performance and during intermission.
